Without question, the number one occurrence in my life in 2011 was an awakening

Unprecedented rain precipatates probable flooding….

That, unfortunately, is the worst case scenario. Freshly interim levees are built; elevated to

Beginning of breach at Upper Crevasse...

the 51′ mark. However, published reports say only 15% of the Upper Crevasse has been put to 55′. Why is that so important? Since the epic 1927 flood, the Ohio River gauge at Cairo Ill., has reached that mark only five times. In 1937, 1950, 1973, 1993 & 2011. How many times has it hit 51′. Too many to list in this brief piece (will update later).

USACE officials issued a press release today:

http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mvm.usace.army.mil%2Fpublicaffairs%2FNews%2Fpress_releases%2F2011_Releases%2F11_36_BPNM_.pdf&h=NAQHNLSF7AQFt9fkRAdyC9JyMkFXVB4xScK03oJEIVtMpUw

In essence, given due and clear warning that flooding is anticipated and if one reads between the lines just a bit the flood fight will be addressed by all means necessary including using innovative materials to bring the breach up to 55′.

Trouble is. That’s about 7,500 feet of levee to implement these measures. And, it will be on top of a newly formed crown. Not, the almost century long levee that withstood the initial blasts with fury refusing to yield the length anticipated in the breaches and with one crevasse completely averse to operating as designed.

Middle Crevasse. Nov. 4 2011

The serious matter is another rush of wather thru these fields would be – and its hard to say again – but a Groundhog Day of devastation; with weeks and months of cleanup for anxious farmers; workers and citizens. As the community is just now getting back to some sense of normalcy but – and this is just my observation – still not back to prior activation days…

In control of the situation, as was the case in late April and early May, is the epic rainfall training in all the wrong places right up the Ohio River Valley and thru the Tennessee and Cumberland Valley.  Keep an eye of the Dams and river levels on those tributaries of the Ohio and you will get a preview of what kind of water will be flowing thru – well, hopefully – around Mississippi and New Madrid County.

I have placed a call this evening to James Pogue, PR man for the USACE and hope to get some additional information I will share once gathered.

No one wants to experience what is still fresh in the mind of the citizenry. Not one.

Thanksgiving….pre-post…; Man, lot of good football this weekend…

As I have participated in the Facebook chronicling of days of Thankfulness, I’m hoping it’s possible to write a couple of fun items throughout the Holidays without a long, saga of things that I am thankful. And, in a larger sense, I am thankful for each moment of each day and truly try to find a way to relay that thru my writings/my interactions with people – even outside of FB; and my supremely important growing and continuing life-long relationships with Mason and Kaylie. For that – everything more – I am thankful…

Now, to the real talking points of this article; Sports. There is a lot of good stuff to enjoy this weekend and I – like many of my fellow Cardinal Nation members – are still basking in the maturing realization of what we actually saw – and now believe what I just saw. Thanks Jack for those memories and thanks to the StL Cardinals for that wondrous ride thru the fall to the World Series Championship. Now, that’s a memory maker. Although there is no baseball this weekend, still a bit of chatter with the unsettling non-signing of Albert Pujols.

For the record: I’m 100% confident he will remain a Cardinal for life thus becoming the new ‘Mang’ in StL. I’m aware of the cynics who are finding numerous scenarios where King Albert leaves, but I’m not buying. Throughout it all, I still have faith in human kind and feel Pujols will do the right thing. Only time will tell…

To football: College football has taken a black eye with the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State. Those consequences will reverberate off the fields for years. On the field Saturday, the Nittany Lions face Wisconsin for a chance to play in the first ever Big 10 Championship Game. Kind of ironic, yes? The Bowl Championship Series *(BCS) is a shambles.  Which one-loss team deserves the right to be gator bait for LSU in the National Championship? Is this the last year for the current system; how far away are we from the +1 scenario wanted by many – and now, seemingly – the BCS itself. If #3 Arkansas beats unanimous #1 LSU, will the computers implode trying to decipher who plays where; when, and for what…

I don’t see that happening. LSU takes care of the Razorbacks – tho I will be rooting for the Hawgs – and Wisconsin wins at home over PSU.

Will Missouri beat Kansas and elevate its bowl berth a bit above the Outhouse Back Door Bowl? Obviously, there are a variety of more important and compelling reasons the Tiges left the Big 12, the second-tier bowl selections during the Chase Daniels era was a factor, however. Mizzou at 6-4 in the SEC gets better bowl placement than a 6-4 in the Big 12…

Lot of other quality college football and the NFL offers their annual Thanksgiving feast and traditions. This year, the Lions actually have a change to play for something. The Cowboys could be in for a let-down trap game. And the late Thursday addition on the NFL Network caps the day, filled with football family and feastdom. And there’s’ Sunday’s ritual of penance having to watch the Rams die a slow agonizingly boring football demise right in front of our very eyes. Or it may just be me. Piitchers and Catchers report in less than a 100 days.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone…Kp, Mason & Kaylie

Chillaxin weekend…

There were times in life where Friday nights and weekends were consumed with finding something to do…just having to be moving, going somewhere doing – well – anything.

Not now…

Content with just being.

In one place at one time. Knowing the soft laughter and loud noises currently surrounding me are like music to my ears – that in the old days would have been coming from some band on a stage in some place.

But the place to be now is Home. And, simply, that’s where the Heart is…

It’s easy to see the joys. It’s also equally as tough to find the balance. Of Love and strictness; play and fun…chore time and school work. Lately, I’ve been retrospective in terms of analyzing the future prospects on the Horizon…and frankly, it’s been illuminating, excruciating and invigorating…

As one wise cousin said to me once, “It’ll be OK because it’s got to be OK.”

Profounder words were never uttered. Life forces dictate our existence. Dreams are only bound by lack of vision and Hope. Searching for the answers enhance this process we all share traveling the journey

Look around. In this time of Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations ahead; Families will take time to share cherished memories; warmth and tenderness. All the while people are suffering, too.

The tragedy of the Oklahoma State basketball coaches; the ongoing national saga of a sordid child-sex scandal at one of the countries most prestigious universities; locally, two husbands are suspected in foul play in the disappearance of their wives; police are forced to shoot to protect themselves…

There is no escaping reality. Putting it on pause for a while and chillaixin for a weekend…
